Winter is COMING!

Winter is Coming….literally!

Not only is everyone getting into the season to be jolly and giving thanks, we can thank the Lord that Marissa Meyer’s final installment of the Lunar Chronicles, Winter is coming out tomorrow, the wait is over!

Marissa Meyer is quite savvy on social media, almost always tweeting, doing Live tweets of Q & A’s with fans, encouraging future writers and keep her loyal fans updated with all that she is doing.

With Twitter and Facebook under her belt she has moved on and made great use of Snapchat through the account of Fierce Reads (@Fiercereads) but what is even cooler is that they are using Periscope to live stream her launch party for Winter.
Periscope in essence is an app, owned by Twitter, that allows for the user to stream live video to the world. So, for those who can not attend the launch party (I sadly work and live to far away *tear*), you can still go on to Periscope and through Fierce Reads account, watch the live action of the party.

Again , technology allows for us to connect through time and space; for us to experience things like we could never before. Giving you the ease of pre-order or downloading a copy of Winter (or at least the first two chapters which are free!) instead of waiting in line before hiding away in a hole and not coming out until the last page has been turned. But, that is the sacrifice some of us are willing to make for the smell and feel of magic in our hands.

Epic Reads brought #TheHeirBall

As Selection fans know and being a fan myself, we are anxiously counting the days until the release of The Heir by Keira Cass and…

oh shit

calm down

calm down 2

[Okay, okay, okay, I’m back. I’m here, I’m present. Just had to get that out.]

ok bro

Anyway, there are 10 DAYS left until the release of The Heir and in our anticipation for the release, there have of course been witty Snapchats if you have Snapchat and if you don’t have the Selection Series on your snap then here you are, find username: selectionseries.

the hier

Kiera Cass has kept our anxieties at bay with her witty tweets, updates on her tour which will be provided at the end of this blog post for you guys and there has been videos made to provide us with some fun visuals of The Heir and the different suitors who will be fighting for Eadlyn’s hand. I do hope there is gauntlet slapping and duels taking place in this book. No? Okay I’ll be picking up my Regency romance novels later then…

Speaking of suitors and since this blog is about all things connecting social media and Young Adult novels, Epic Reads, a site that is all about Young Adult novels, started a contest to help us with the wait, but you if you are like me, it only made me MORE ANXIOUS! I mean names of the suitors were leaked as well as a short, vague piece of information about who they were, it’s all madness I say! The whole contest though, was centered around who we believed would win Eadlyn’s hand in the end. (I secretly hope, though that the books leaves us hanging so Kiera will keep writing!)

#TheHeirBall as the contest was dubbed was a two part-er. The first part was a regular bracket that you would find in sports, especially since March Madness just came and went as maddening as ever. (Shout outs to the women’s champions, the UCONN HUSKIES and the men’s champions, DUKE!) Fans were given the suitors names to fill in the top 24, 19, 10, 5, 3, 2 until only one was left standing. I provided my bracket below as you can see. But how would you determine who would fit where without knowing them? That is where the second part comes in.

The Heir Bracket could not be completed without also completing the Dream Cast of Eadlyn’s Selection. This is where you were given the suitor’s name, along with information as to where they lived, what they looked like and a bit of personality info. There were blank spaces left to place who you think or would cast that person. I participated and here is my dream cast. I must say they are a handsome bunch 🙂

There were some great entries and it was a fun thing to do but it was a contest, there of course there had to be a winner. The winner of the contest was @EvansAlli. Congratulations to her!

Since then there have been some videos of the suitors and though Kiera was asked if anymore would be made, our Wordstar declined giving us a straight answer…or DID SHE?! Hmmm…

So, as we wait for May 5th, we hope that more teasers will appear (BUT NOT SPOILERS!) and the days will pass quickly and swiftly to get our hands on The Heir. And if you haven’t pre-ordered your copy yet (which is silly, all of you have!) you can do it on Amazon or Barnes & Noble who have exclusive signed copies of the book. A Game For Writers — Wednesday Writer’s Prompts and Inspirations –

The Princess: Kiera Cass Rules Social Media

kiera cassKiera Cass, bestselling author of the selection series is a real WordStar, the Princess of Quirk and when it comes to using social media, she is who I dub to be the Queen of the Social Bookworms. Kiera has a great handle of social media being of a different generation, Generation X, from her audience who are mostly of the Millennial generation.

Kiera is an author that utilizes most of the popular social media platforms; Snapchat, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr and has her own website, She uses them not only to share news about her books and upcoming book tours, she also shares her personality behind the “WordStar” that she is. She shares her every day life, tidbits about the exciting and not so exciting process of writing, fingerling about boy bands and her superhuman powers of being a mom.super

As an author she also uses social media to connect with her fans who can’t get enough or know enough about her books. She’s creatively used Snapchat (@selectionseries) to reveal sneak peeks of her upcoming book, The Heir and do a quick Q&A for her fans. You can catch her tweeting to fans, giving updates on her books tours, dancing In

Her Tumblr ( is a great expression of it. From giving sneak peeks and sharing her books to providing tips for writing and giving her own advice to her fandom. She also has her own personal Facebook account as well as an author’s page for her fans  to provide them with updates, links to articles, answering to fans and linking to her website. All here account all share her personality and are user friendly. Through her social media accounts she invites all the little fangirls and fanboys into her world of mustaches and quirkiness.

Kiera is like a bird, singing quirk, news about her upcoming books, updates and all that she is on Twitter (@kieracass). If you ever doubted a brand or author thinking that it’s not really them but some stand in saying that they are, Kiera has a her mark stamped all over it. With only 140 characters, Kiera makes the most and let’s up know how she party’s like a word star.

Social media is a way for people not only to take in what is given to them but to give back, interact, share, comment, be a part of the experience. Reading has always been a solitary activity but social media has given it a channel to be more interactive. Whether its Kiera or her publicist, Kieran Cass reigns supreme when it comes to handling the madness of social media.word star

When You’re All: TMI! TID! TDA! TBC! TLH! BTW…OMG! for Cassandra Clare

TMI: The Mortal Instruments

TID: The Infernal Devices

TBC: The Bane Chronicles

TDA: The Dark Artifice

TLH: The Last Hours

tlh (2)

All are series written by the author Cassandra Clare and centered around the magical world of Shadowhunters in either modern day or in the Victorian age of London, England. The series all are intertwined with each other, making it hard for those engrossed to read only read one book or series, you need to read them all!

When new information about my favorite series comes out online

I look like:

The series can not only be found in the United States but also translated and across countries such as the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Germany and France. In 2013, The Mortal Instruments Series was on the New York Bestseller List for 102 consecutive weeks, knocking out series like The Hunger Games and Percy Jackson and the Olympians from the top spot. The series has everyone anticipating the upcoming series, The Dark Artifices and The Last Hours which are continuations of the series with new main characters, love triangles and with the return of old ones.

Cassandra Clare has grown in popularity and just as she is a wiz with the pen, her social media standing is also quite magical. Her website, along with her social media accounts matches her black and gold magical theme. In the website itself you can find information on Cassandra Clare, how to contact her (Email over snail mail), information on her books and upcoming series, information on other works that she has published and links to her social media accounts.

Social media itself is a tool to not only share content but for other to reply and share that content as well. To gain interaction with people no matter where they are. Before, when you would send your fan mail to your favorite author you would be lucky if they even read it and even luckier to get a reply. With email the likeness of the chance opened up a bit more but not as much. With the integration of social media there is a bigger chance that you could get a reply with mentioning your author directly if they have and account and knowing it would pop up in their notifications the moment you send it.

Now there are authors who take the time to answer their fans or they just read it and do a general thank you to their fans. Cassandra Clare though is another kind of author. She doesn’t make social media accounts just to have them, to be on what’s trending or because her publicist says it will look good and help her sell more books. In her interactions on Twitter and Facebook there is no strategy to be seen or someone else doing it for her, there is authenticity to when Cassandra Clare tweets and interacts with her fans. She is the author that takes the time out of her busy schedule to show how much her fans support and appreciation of her novels.

Screenshot (9)

She responds to fans questions about her books…

Screenshot (11)Screenshot (6)

And their reaction is more than surprised and excited…

Screenshot (12)

She even answers personal questions, shows that she is a caring person and is not some super human who writes amazing sorties and creates out of this world worlds but that she is a person that feels and knows what it is to be in your shoes.

Social media can consume a lot of time, time that can be better spent watching movies, catching up on reading, finishing your work before the deadline and your publisher kill you. But when one takes the time to tweet back, hold conversation in 140 characters or less and keep fans updated on the progressions of their favorite characters, people do take notice.

And we thank you.

The Exquisite Queerness of Jackson’s “The Hobbit”

Queerly Different

It is no secret that we queers have always had an appreciation and an adoration of Tolkien’s work.  The richness and depth with which he paints the relationships between men–especially that between Sam and Frodo as they make their way to Mount Doom–almost inevitably strike a resonant chord with young queer nerds reading Tolkien’s work.  Jackson, whatever else he has done to translate Tolkien’s work to film, has also heightened and intensified the affectiveness of these relationships, depicting them with true emotional richness.  And, whether one hates or loves his new Hobbit trilogy, these new films have also opened up fascinating new avenues for queer reading and appropriation.

Perhaps no character in this new trilogy typifies this queer aesthetic as much as Thranduil, ably and memorably portrayed by Lee Pace.  Now there are some who have referred to Pace’s acting as scenery-chewing, and perhaps they havev a bit of a point…

Guest Blog: Burned – The White-Hot Deaths of 8 Literary Movements

Interesting Literature

By Patrick Smith

“The term ‘Movement’—and it’s always written with a capital ‘M’—has always given me the heebie-jeebies, it’s very pretentious,” science-fiction icon William Gibson told Andy Diggle in a 1997 interview. “I was so taken aback the first time I heard the word ‘Cyberpunk.’” Of course, since Gibson’s meteoric success with the publication of Neuromancer in 1984, he has understood the fickleness and ephemerality of literary trends too well to not be suspicious of the inevitable outcome.

“As soon as I realized it was happening I was calling all the different people I was associating with and saying, ‘Duck and cover! It’s a labelling operation! Don’t let them do this, we’re dead in the water!’ But everyone I called just said, ‘Oh, I want it on the back of my jacket, this is so cool!’ And at that point I just thought, Yeah, you can have it…
